Retiree Library Collection

The Retiree Library Collection consists of materials – books (fiction and non-fiction), feature films, documentaries – that provide relevant information to our Skidmore community of retired employees. The collection was started with funding from an award from the American Council on Education and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The 2012 award recognized Skidmore College’s innovative practices in supporting faculty retirement. All items purchased with the award are integrated into the library’s main collection and are shelved according to format and subject matter. Browse the collection using the Retiree Library Collection page, or click here to view this collection in the library’s catalog.

Borrowing Materials

Retirees are encouraged to borrow materials found in the catalog. Interlibrary Loan remains open to retired faculty only. Our Course Reserves system will be available to faculty or staff retirees who either matriculate or officially audit a class.

Recalls, Holds & Renewals

If you need an item which is already checked out to another patron:

Placing a Hold

A Hold means that item will be held for you at the Circulation Desk when it is returned by the patron.

  1. Use the Library Catalog to place Holds on items.
  2. First, sign into your account by clicking on the Login link on the top right and logging in.
  3. Next, search for your items.
  4. Click on the title of an item to go into its record. Scroll to the bottom and click on “Place a Hold” then “Submit Request.”

If you click on Your Account (top-right), you should see the item listed in your Holds and Recalls. You’ll receive an email when your item is ready for pickup at the Circulation desk.

Placing a Recall

A Recall is when a patron must return an item earlier than its due date (within 48 hours of the Recall Request). Please note that the current borrower is guaranteed a 3-week loan before an item can be recalled, so if an item was just checked out, you’ll have to wait several weeks before a recall can be issued.

To place a Recall Request, contact the Circulation Department at circ2@skidmore.edu.

Please note that the Library does not reveal borrowers’ names to other borrowers. In certain circumstances the Library may act as an intermediary between the current borrower and the patron who needs the material as long as confidentiality of both patrons is protected.

Renewals

Most items borrowed from the library can be renewed for additional time.

To renew items you can use the Library Catalog:

  1. Sign into your account by clicking on the Login link on the top right and logging in.
  2. Click on the link Checked Out Items to see what items you are currently borrowing
  3. Either click on the individual items you’d like to renew or select all of them and then click either “Renew Selected Items” or “Renew All Items”

You’ll receive a message indicating whether the item was successfully renewed or not. If an item has been renewed, you’ll see the new due date. Each item also tells you how many times you’ve renewed it.

Fines

It is the responsibility of the patron to return items on the date due. The Library charges fines for the late return of books and other library materials to encourage circulation of materials. Reminder notices are sent out by e-mail as a courtesy only. Not receiving a reminder notice or failing to note the due date of a renewed items is not a valid excuse for returning materials late.

Books
$.25/day per item to a maximum of $15.00 per item.

Course Reserve Materials & Hourly Loans
3 Hour Reserves/Loans – $2/hour per item to a maximum of $25.00 per item.
1 and 3-Day Reserves – $2/day per item to a maximum of $25.00 per item.

Course Reserves allows the equitable use of materials that are in high demand as a result of specific class assignments. Because the materials are limited, it is important to return the items as soon as possible to provide equal access for the entire class. No renewals.

Recalled Items
$2/day per item to a maximum of $25.00 per item.
Items recalled for course reserve are due within 48 hours no matter how long they have been in circulation. Items which are recalled by another patron must be returned within 48 hours of the notice, but the current borrower is guaranteed a 3-week loan.

Videos (DVD & VHS) and audio materials (CDs, LPs, Portable Record Players)
$1/day per item to a maximum of $15.00 per item.

Damaged Items
If Library materials have been damaged while on loan to a patron, a fee may be charged to cover repair or replacement costs and processing fees.

Lost and Missing Materials

Overdue items not returned within 75 days of their due date will be considered lost and the borrower charged accordingly. As per current policy, all items marked lost will incur a fee totaling the replacement cost as well as a $10 lost item processing fee. Should the items subsequently be returned to the Library, a maximum fine of $15.00 will be imposed and a refund of the difference authorized.

Missing Items
A formal search request may be initiated for any item neither on the shelves nor checked out. Once a Search Request form (available at the Circulation Desk) is completed, Circulation staff will conduct an intensive search for the item for one week.

The patron will be contacted at the end of that week as to the status of the item (lost or found), and if the item is not found, students/faculty/staff can request the item via Interlibrary Loan.
