Introduction
What distinguishes an artist’s book from an art book? Either may be lavishly illustrated and painstakingly constructed. Both may feature the words and ideas of an artist. Both may be printed in limited edition, or conversely, mass marketed to a wide audience. The distinction between the two forms ultimately lies in their conception. Unlike an art book, which is a representation of artists’ works and ideas, an artists’ book is itself an original work of art, as visually and conceptually whole as a painting or sculpture.
